NAMI Humboldt leader details multiple grants and local support groups

Leah Nagy, family liaison and president of NAMI Humboldt, opened public comment describing the nonprofit’s local support groups and recent grant activity. She said NAMI runs four regular groups across the county — two on Mondays, one at Humboldt Plaza for families and another in Southern Humboldt — and detailed applications and awards that would expand programming.

Nagy said the organization received a CIT grant (about $25,040) and an additional $5,000 allocation for a COPE program aimed at first responders. She described a separate $5,000 OAC SMARTS advocacy-training award and a pending $5,000 Flare grant to pilot a mental-health curriculum in middle schools, adding that she had three teachers ready to implement the curriculum if funded. “We did receive a CIT grant … 25,040 I can't remember the number. But we got a CIT grant, and along with that is a program they added another 5,000 per program called COPE,” Nagy said during public comment.

Nagy also said she applied for a $25,000 California Endowment grant intended for five rural counties and noted her application ranked in the top 100 online submissions. She said the county will not know end-of-July decisions for some awards and thanked board members for listening, urging continued support for local peer and family-led services.
