Vernonia board weighs contingency plans to serve Mist students after road closure

"Two days ago, we were notified that Mist was not going to be accessible," the superintendent said as the district scrambled to develop a consistent plan.
Board members and administrators discussed the practical constraints: roughly 31 students would be affected, six of them on the north side, and classroom absorption capacity was limited (administration estimated an additional 3–5 students per class, ~20 students total on top of existing loads). Possible transportation solutions included running a van route and using an existing pedestrian path for pickup points; concerns included janitorial services, food service logistics and emergency medical access if students are on alternate sites.
The superintendent said ODOT estimated an optimistic reopening by Sept. 9 but cautioned district staff that a more realistic timeline could be two to three weeks; the board directed staff to continue parent outreach and finalize a decision after additional family input and a meeting with Mist staff.
