Board reviews new financial packet as district faces projected year‑end deficit
Summary
Vernonia SD 47J trustees reviewed a new two‑page financial packet showing a projected ending fund balance of -$224,000 before changes; members questioned a jump in the State School Fund estimate (budgeted $4.8M to a projected $5.1M), ESD cash‑out decisions and large donation variances.

Board members on Tuesday examined a redesigned finance packet and pressed staff for additional monthly detail after seeing a projected ending general fund balance described in the packet as “negative 224,000.”
“...that gives us our projected ending fund balance of negative 224,000,” said S4 while walking trustees through the revenue and expense pages. Members asked for a monthly‑weighted projection rather than only an end‑of‑year amount to track timing variances (for example, insurance premiums paid early) and to better identify whether current spending is on target.
Finance and leadership also explained why the State School Fund (SSF) estimate has changed from the budgeted $4.8 million to a revised projected $5.1 million: updated transportation and ADM inputs submitted to the state in September raised the district’s estimate. The superintendent cautioned that SSF estimates are later reconciled and can change again when state estimates are revised.
Trustees also discussed taking ESD service credits as cash this year for short‑term cash flow (which raises both revenue and associated expenses) and flagged a projected drop in the May SSF payback—an estimated reduction of roughly $66,000 under current scenarios.
Next steps: the finance lead will add a month‑by‑month view and provide follow‑up notes on donation assumptions and the student body account consolidations to answers outstanding board questions.
