At Tuesday’s board meeting, Superintendent (voice 5) announced the district received a summer-school grant and outlined plans for a K–12 program running July 7 through Aug. 1. "We did apply for the summer school grant. We received it," the Superintendent said. The program will include online credit recovery and in-person enrichment, with field trips and activities funded under the grant.
Board members asked how students were enrolled; Superintendent said sign-ups came from an initial opt‑in survey and the district had not yet performed targeted outreach. "Right now, we haven't reached out to any families. We actually just sent out the survey… And right now, we've got 60 kids," the Superintendent said. Administrators said they have staffing and meal-service plans in place and expect to support up to about 80 students while they finalize state submission requirements.
Program staff noted the summer program requires about 80 instructional hours and includes a grades 9–12 credit-recovery strand through the Vernonia Family Academy and enrichment for elementary grades. Board members and administrators discussed access where road closures limit pickup; the Superintendent said the district will evaluate alternate pick-up routes or allow families to drop off students to avoid exclusion.
The board did not take separate action on the grant at the meeting; it was presented as an awarded opportunity the district will operationalize in the coming weeks.
