District reports mixed trimester 2 assessment results, lower referrals and higher participation
Summary
Staff reported mixed assessment changes for trimester 2—notable gains in some grades (3rd-grade math to 44%, 5th-grade assessments to 55.4%), improved participation in enrichment opportunities and a drop in discipline referrals, while chronic absenteeism rose then improved after a March incentive.

A district presenter reviewed trimester 2 academic and behavior metrics, noting both positive movement in several grades and areas that require continued focus.
"So we are here to talk about trimester 2 data," the presenter said, then explained that I-Ready and other universal screeners have not been re-administered since January, leaving some slides unchanged. The presenter highlighted a "really nice jump" for 1st grade in I-Ready and said 3rd grade showed a rise in math to 44 percent and 5th grade showed an increase to 55.4 percent on end-of-unit assessments. The report said kindergarten does not take the I-Ready diagnostic and that unit-assessment comparisons are limited by pilot programs.
The presentation also covered student opportunity and engagement: overall participation in ESD activities was reported at 33 percent, with one upper grade at 62 percent. Staff reported a noticeable increase in chronic absenteeism earlier in the trimester, attributed in part to illness and seasonal travel; an attendance incentive in March raised attendance to about 96 percent for the incentive month. Discipline referrals fell in trimester 2, and staff noted many students had only a single referral, reducing the need for higher-tier interventions.
A board member asked what a "universal screener" is; the presenter explained the screener is a quick, grade-level check "like a thermometer" to flag students needing deeper diagnostics and support. The presenter said the district plans a final curriculum decision in early May for its ELA pilot programs.
