The South Williamsport Area School District Board of Education on May 4 approved a slate of motions covering finance, personnel and governance.
Ben Brigandi moved and the board approved payment of bills in three funds: General Fund $742,994.58; Food Service Fund $56,776.59; and GO Bond 2023 $69,000.50. The motion passed on a roll call with all nine members recorded as voting yes (Cathy Bachman; Ben Brigandi; Dr. Summer Bukeavich; Todd Engel; John Hitesman; Dr. Kimberly Kohler; Jason Lewis; Steve Rupert; Jason Young). The board also approved the minutes of April 13, 2026, by unanimous roll call.
Board members approved personnel items including acceptance of two resignations (Joan Helmrich, Food Service Manager, retirement effective June 5, 2026; Madeline Hulslander, paraprofessional, effective May 27, 2026) and new hires for the 2026–2027 school year: Ronald Timko (High School Math Teacher, step B‑1 pending degree completion), Port Habalar (7th grade social studies, step B‑1), Sara Caputo (6th grade ELA, step B‑3), a food service worker (Adam Stryker, Central Elementary, 6.5 hours/day at $16.18/hour effective April 22, 2026) and substitute/classified appointments. Several leaves were also approved: an unpaid leave for EE #1315 (April 13–June 5, 2026) and child‑bearing/child‑rearing leave for EE #1389 (end of September 2026–December 31, 2026).
Other actions approved by unanimous roll calls included first readings of several policies (Nos. 140; 221; 236.1; 325; 332); approval of the Senior High School 2026–2027 Curriculum Booklet; a partnership agreement with Keystone/Red Rock Job Corps through June 30, 2027; a facility‑use waiver allowing the Senior Legion Baseball Team to use the baseball field June 1–July 4, 2026; disposal or sale of two wood‑shop machines; and a $1,000 Northway Community Church student award for a graduating senior.
For governance matters, Dr. Summer Bukeavich nominated Cathy Bachman to serve as board treasurer for the year beginning July 1; with no other nominations the board voted to appoint Mrs. Bachman. The board also appointed McNerney, Page, Vanderlin and Hall as district solicitor for 2026–2027 at a rate of $195 per hour with paralegal services at $135 per hour.
