Several parents used the public-comment period to urge the Eden Central School District to preserve its German language offering following a teacher’s retirement, asking that the district post the vacancy quickly and, if necessary, find creative interim solutions so current students can continue through their program.
Catherine Schneider said she has children in the district and asked directly: "Are there plans to replace Frau Crinen after retirement and keep German going?" The superintendent replied the district will try and that hiring a qualified replacement will be "incredibly difficult," but staff have discussed alternate plans. Parent Jessica Antonik urged the board to post the vacancy and explore local college partnerships or long-term substitute options, noting UB has a significant German department and could provide candidates.
District leadership said there is an internal process to complete before posting and that multiple factors — certification, availability of candidates and budget constraints — will inform the final solution. The superintendent confirmed the district intends to post the vacancy and to evaluate whether seventh graders can continue in the program depending on which language candidate is ultimately hired.
