Valley Stream Central High School District revises honor‑roll calculation
Summary
District administrators explained a new formula for honor‑roll eligibility: marking‑period averages will be computed using course meeting‑weighting (daily=1.0, every‑other‑day=0.5); AP/honors courses will not be additionally weighted for honor‑roll purposes; PE and noncredit courses are excluded.

VALLEY STREAM CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT officials told the board they have changed how the honor roll will be calculated to better reflect course meeting frequency.
An administrator explained that "honor roll is known to be based on a student's marking‑period average," and described the new formula: the district will add final numeric grades from all credit‑bearing academic courses, then divide by the total based on how often each course meets; daily courses are counted as 1.0 and every‑other‑day courses as 0.5. The administrator said the change is intended to ensure each course is proportionately reflected in the marking‑period average.
The presentation made clear that honors, advanced placement and college‑level courses will not receive additional weighting for honor‑roll calculations; physical education, pass/fail and noncredit courses will not be included. Staff noted that end‑of‑year GPAs (which include course weighting) will differ from honor‑roll averages because the honor roll will not apply the grade‑weighting used in final GPAs.
Officials invited questions and offered to explain the formula to families who notice changes in students' marking‑period averages. No formal vote or policy adoption was recorded during the explanation; staff characterized this as a technical change recommended by administrators and the education committee.
