John Hardesty, speaking "on behalf of the MCAEA," told the Marion Center Area School Board that the district's teaching staff includes many with master's degrees but that they are currently "operating on last year's salary," and that stipend issues remain unresolved for staff who oversee extracurricular competitions.
Hardesty named staff he said have not received compensation for additional work, saying, "we have Mr. Ellenberger, Mr. Weiss and Mrs. Sturrock who have gone beyond to give our students opportunities to compete local, district and state, even national levels with no compensation." He urged the board to "resolve our issues and get a fair contract." Board President Gregg Sacco called for general citizens' comments and allowed the public speakers to make their appeals.
Parent Ashley Hall also spoke during public comment, identifying herself as "a parent," and said her children "have received outstanding support from the teachers in order to succeed in their education," adding that she "urge[s] you to settle a fair contract." The board did not record a direct response to those public comments during the session; the meeting proceeded to its scheduled agenda items.
