The La Center School District Board discussed a proposed Educational Programs & Operations (EP & O) levy the district plans to put before voters in February. Board members discussed a preliminary estimate that the district would need $4.1 million in the levythe district's estimate for the first yearand noted the current levy collection level for the remaining year is about $3.0 million. The board expressed reluctance to accept a raw 27% year-over-year growth figure without supporting data.
Superintendent Peter Rosenkranz told trustees he would provide additional analysis showing how rising costs and demographic changes drive the levy request and said many districts statewide are facing financial distress. The board asked Rosenkranz to return with a breakdown that ties the proposed increase to specific expenditures so trustees can clearly explain to constituents why the levy amount is needed and where funds would be spent.
