During the committee-of-the-whole segment of its June 23 meeting, the Valley Stream UFSD 13 Board of Education passed a resolution expressing its support for legislation that would require local voter approval for charter-school applicants.
The resolution, read in the committee discussion, framed charter schools as entities that "divert public funds" from resident school districts and noted that charter budgets are not approved by affected school districts or local voters. The resolution concluded: "be it resolved that the board of education advocates for legislation requiring all charter school applicants to be approved by the local voters of impacted communities prior to submission to relevant state ... entities." The board moved, seconded and approved the resolution by voice vote.
Trustees characterized the action as an advocacy position rather than a regulatory change under the board's direct authority; the resolution urges state-level legislative action.
