District honors longtime staff and educators at June 23 Board meeting

The Valley Stream Union Free School District 13 Board of Education used the June 23 business meeting to recognize a long roster of retirees from several elementary schools.
At James T. Drew Elementary School the principal thanked secretary Judy Saliga for 12 years of service and described her as someone who "never complained, did her job, encouraged the children, supported the staff, and answered the never ending questions". Howell Road School honored Kevin Olsen for 37 years as a physical-education teacher, with his principal saying his work built students' confidence and teamwork. Wheeler Avenue School and Willow Road School likewise saw multi-decade staff recognized — including teachers noted for saving a student's life and literacy specialists credited with transforming school programs.
Board members invited attendees to a post-meeting meet-and-greet in the cafeteria to congratulate retirees and other honorees. No formal board action was required for the recognitions.
