Council hears plan after Well #2 casing failure; asks for engineer review of sinkhole

Mayor Jon Brady and maintenance lead Danny Gamblin summarized findings on Well #2 during the March 4 meeting, saying Sargent Drilling removed the tubing to video the casing and concluded the casing’s condition leaves redrilling as the only viable option. The city noted the well has been shut off for over a year and that the cost to redrill is unknown pending the video footage; the city also has a rural water contract for emergency supply.

Maintenance described additional drainage work planned after repeated surface water near Highway 56 and Maple by Rock Creek Café; county and state crews will dig to locate the source, with a proposed ditch and drain to carry water to a nearby waterway. Staff also reported a sinkhole near the Co‑Op and Pinnacle caused by an improperly sealed smaller culvert inside a larger pipe; planned repairs include excavating to the 36‑inch culvert, connecting solid pipe, installing a new culvert and tying into the ditch. Council asked staff to solicit engineering proposals and to add better barricades on the road.
