Macoupin County opens dedicated voting center to replace cramped courthouse space

Macoupin County election staff announced a new, dedicated voting center that moves early voting out of cramped courthouse spaces and into an ADA-compliant facility intended to improve security and voter experience. "This is our new voting center," an agency official said, describing a space with a check-in table, voting booths and secure storage for machines.

The official said the county courthouse, built in 1867, had seen usable election space shrink over the past 13 years while vote-by-mail expanded, forcing staff to use an old boiler room and scattered locations for equipment. "It's kinda just spread all over the place," a staff member said, describing storage in basement areas the speaker called "the dungeon." The official said a grant that funded the new center had been "a lifesaver."

County staff described practical barriers voters faced at the courthouse: walking from parking, passing security, taking an elevator or stairs and sometimes voting in temporary hallway setups. The agency official said the new center is fully ADA compliant, parking is directly in front of the building and "usually people are in and out within 5 minutes," a detail staff presented as evidence the center will streamline voting.

Officials also emphasized that the larger, organized storage area allows the office to run public tests, retabulations and audits in a space that can be locked down, rather than having machines and materials in general office areas. The agency official framed the center as not only a local improvement but also an example rural counties could replicate if similar funding were available.

The announcement focused on operational improvements rather than new policy changes; county staff urged more consistent state or federal election funding to support such upgrades, saying the grant filled a critical gap while broader funding remains "not specified."
