The board heard a presentation about Winter Lakes Elementary that highlighted school routines, student-led projects and upcoming family events. The principal told the board the campus convenes in the gym daily at 8:21 a.m. to recite the pledge, and she walked members through curricular and extracurricular activities including a campus-wide woolly-bear art project, rock painting and a family game-and-costume night on Oct. 29. "I am addressing you tonight as the principal of Winter Lakes Elementary, not the curriculum director," the presenter said, explaining that the materials on the board members' tables illustrated recent classroom work.
Staff introduced classroom activities and supports for both in-person and online learners. Kim Gallagher described supports for at-home students, including a Google Calendar booking system and weekly conferencing: she said she met regularly with a student to review science projects and provide feedback. The presentation also noted vocational learning opportunities: speakers reported that last year 11 students took a food-handler course and 10 earned state food-handler cards, and the staff described partnerships with local restaurants to expand work-site experiences.
The presentation named staff members and volunteers who contributed to the projects and said the school used grant and district funds to buy targeted curriculum materials and workbooks. Board members praised student creativity during the Q&A and had no substantive objections to the campus activities described.
