Reporters and transparency groups decry stalled Sunshine Task Force appointments during public comment

During the public-comment period several speakers raised concerns about delays in filling vacancies on the Sunshine Ordinance Task Force and the board's handling of transparency oversight. Richard Nee, speaking for the Society of Professional Journalists Northern California Chapter and the Pacific Media Workers Guild, said delaying appointments and creating a hiatus for the task force is "anything but pragmatic" and warned that it could force complainants to seek court remedies, costing the city in the long run.

A remote caller and other in-person commenters echoed concerns that nine of 11 seats had lapsed and that overdue reappointments were creating a backlog of unresolved sunshine complaints. Will Hayworth, calling from District 9, urged that the four organization-nominated reappointments be calendared for the first September rules committee meeting to restore quorum and allow the task force to reconvene. Commenters framed the issue as one of core civic oversight and accountability rather than partisan preference.
