LISD committee advances dual language model, aims for program by 2028

Misty Rieber, speaking for Lubbock Independent School District administration, told the Student Achievement/Engagement Committee the Dual Language Committee spent the past year developing a recommended language-of-instruction model and reviewing feedback, research and data. A final committee meeting will produce the recommended model that staff will present to the board in May for approval.

If the board approves the recommendation, staff plan to form two implementation groups: a transition committee to plan a gradual rollout beginning the next school year to allow for curriculum development and staff training, and an ambassador committee to inform and engage families and community members about the program. The district stated it aims to have the dual language program fully established in time for the opening of new schools in 2028; the emerging bilingual program will remain unchanged. Misty also noted the district will increase outreach because "many families are not currently informed" about language-program options and staff want to promote enrollment both inside and outside the district.

The proposal is listed as an upcoming board action item; district staff will bring more detailed implementation timelines and staffing recommendations to the May board meeting.
