Board approves update to open-enrollment policy after budget and class-size concerns

The Waterloo Board of Education approved a recommended update to the district's open-enrollment policy for the 2026–27 school year after the superintendent presented proposed parameters for class-size limits and eligibility. "So just kinda make to highlight for those keeping track at home, we're just we're trying to be fiscally responsible with the open enrollment policy," the Board President said during discussion; the motion passed following a roll call.

Board members discussed specific safeguards the policy would include: class-size thresholds that can close a grade to open enrollment before the application period begins, a first-come/first-served application window, and disqualifying criteria such as expulsions or long-term suspensions. Members expressed concern about hiring demands if enrollment increases and emphasized that the policy provides protections to limit openings when staffing or space are constrained. The board voted 'yes' in roll call (Missus Bennett, Mister Moon, Miss Barton, Missus Witten Solner and Mister Wise) and adopted the recommendation as presented.
