Millie Maderas, a student at Lonsdale Elementary, was announced as one of 73 national winners selected for publication in the 2026 edition of the Max Courage anthology, a national writing collection. Chair (speaker 1) said the essay has been catalogued at the Boston Public Library, calling it a “remarkable achievement” for Millie and her teachers.
The district described the Max Courage program as a writing initiative founded by Stephanie and John Waller in memory of their son, Max, that encourages students to reflect on experiences of courage while building literacy and social-emotional skills. “This nationally recognized anthology is part of the Max Powers program,” the chair said, noting all Lonsdale 5th graders participated under the guidance of an official program ambassador and named classroom teachers who supported the work.
School officials led a brief recognition during the ceremony, asking Millie to come forward to accept congratulations and a district commendation. The program and the student's inclusion in the anthology were highlighted as examples of classroom literacy work and community recognition.
