Pacific High journalism students win statewide recognition; editor interviewed U.S. senator

Teacher Amanda Carlton showcased Pacific High School’s journalism program and its student newspaper, The Jolly Roger. Carlton introduced student editors Ashton Wood (editor) and Skyla Larson (assistant editor) and said nearly every student in the class placed or received honorable mention at Fall Media Day, a contest that drew more than 1,200 entrants.
Carlton noted that Ashton Wood won the newswriting contest and recently conducted an interview with U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley; after that interview a Brookings news outlet invited Ashton to assist them. The program’s results were presented to the board as an Educational Spotlight, underscoring extracurricular journalism opportunities at PHS.
