Anthem Way Foundation approves marble polishing schedule and forms AVM working group

The Anthem Way Foundation voted to approve a staff recommendation to polish and seal the Anthem Veterans Memorial marble every two to three years and to form a small ad‑hoc working group to evaluate options to manage water runoff from the memorial’s pillars.

Staff told the Foundation that a thin laminate layer of marble is separating from its backing because of water intrusion. Consultants recommended a full polish and seal—estimated at $16,000—and adding a capped drip edge or other diversion at the top of the pillars to prevent further intrusion. Staff noted the Foundation’s 2025 finances showed a net income of just over $2,000, and that the $16,000 polishing cost would push the account into the red unless fundraising offsets are found.

Director McKenzie moved the staff recommendation and Director Hartman seconded. The Foundation approved the motion by voice vote; Director Barbee recorded an opposition. The staff direction was to proceed with polishing and sealing on a recurring schedule and to convene a small working group to evaluate design options (stainless steel cap, wider cap stone, porcelain alternatives) and return costed options to the Foundation for selection.

Board discussion raised questions about whether the 2–3 year schedule is necessary (one director opposed on that basis) and asked staff to secure additional quotes before proceeding. Staff said they had one quote that included a podium repair and that they are seeking a second proposal from the vendor who previously cleaned the marble.

The Foundation asked staff to present the working group’s options with associated price tags for board consideration and to pursue fundraising to cover the first polishing if needed.
