At a La Center School District board-staff linkage workshop on Oct. 8, 2024, teachers told the board that student behavior problems have escalated and that additional paraeducator support is needed to keep classrooms functioning.
Teachers, speaking during a round-table session attended by Board Chair Craig Whited and Superintendent Peter Rosenkranz, said the escalation in behaviors is contributing to burnout among teachers and administrators and that current staffing levels are insufficient to manage those needs. The minutes note that “they are concerned with the escalation in behaviors and that teachers and administrators are already feeling burned out by the extreme behavior issues.”
Staff asked the board to consider increasing paraeducator coverage or reallocating support to classrooms with the highest needs. The linkage workshop was a discussion-only format; the board adjourned to the library at 4:45 p.m. to discuss the feedback and the meeting adjourned at 5:45 p.m. No formal motions or votes were recorded because the session was a workshop, and no policy action was taken that day.
