Library awarded Beacon grant; commissioners discuss using library space for small events

Arlene Kegley told the board the East Selden Library received a Beacon grant that will cover a new security system. The quote for the work requires roughly $3,000 in total with about half requested up front for materials; Kegley asked the commissioners how to process the upfront payment and staff said the clerk can submit a claim for reimbursement under the grant process.

Kegley also described public interest in holding small, family‑friendly parties in the library during normal hours after a recent open house drew 43 attendees. Commissioners and staff discussed possible fire‑code limits and impacts to regular patrons using computers or attending story hour; library staff said events would be limited, family‑friendly and not a ‘‘free‑for‑all.’’ Commissioners asked the library to confirm occupancy and to coordinate with the fire department and clerk before finalizing a reservations policy.

There was no formal policy change at the meeting; staff will seek occupancy guidance from the fire department and return to the board if a formal reservation policy is needed.
