The Lincoln School Committee advanced a transportation policy that incorporates recommendations from a transportation-efficiency study and authorizes steps intended to improve routing and reduce costs. The committee heard that several recommendations—reducing stops, limiting route requirements and tightening distance rules—have already been folded into the draft policy.
The Chair described the study as “sponsored by the Rhode Island Department of Ed.” The policy includes a provision allowing the district to remove students from bus rosters if families indicate they will not use transportation and subsequently do not ride. The Chair said the ridership survey going out from the district should allow staff to “tighten up the numbers” and improve route efficiency.
Dr. McNamara told the committee First Student’s five-year bid looked most advantageous over the contract life but that staff would need to examine ridership requirements, routing and bell times as part of operational adjustments. Committee members said those operational changes and the survey results will be used alongside contract negotiations and budget reconciliations.
