The Lincoln Public Schools opened its meeting by celebrating student achievement and community service, naming Millie Maderas of Lonsdale Elementary as one of 73 national winners whose essay was selected for the 2026 edition of the Courage of Children anthology. "This is the Max Courage Award," the Moderator said as the student was invited forward.
School leaders also highlighted the Lonsdale Leadership Program’s service projects. The Moderator said the program’s food drive collected 2,467 items this year and that students have donated more than 5,494 items over the past two years to support local families and the Mandel Share Shack partnership. Teachers and teacher assistants credited with supporting the work were listed by name during the recognition.
Why it matters: The district framed the initiative as part of a literacy and social-emotional curriculum that gives fifth graders a chance to reflect on courage and to practice leadership through service learning. The recognition included references to published student work (catalogued in the Boston Public Library) and named staff who led the classroom efforts.
Looking ahead: The board encouraged continued participation in the Max Courage program and local service partnerships as part of curriculum goals.
