Recycling district asks county for about $4 million toward permanent hazardous-waste facility

The Hendricks County Recycling District sought county support to build a permanent 11,800-square-foot facility that would include year-round hazardous-waste handling, office space and an unloading dock. Executive Director Lenn Detwiler and Board Chairman Dan Bridget asked the Council to consider contributing approximately $4 million toward construction.

District leaders said 93% of their current revenue comes from disposal fees and that a permanent building would allow year-round tox-away services (rather than the current five annual Tox-Away Days) and expand environmental-education programming. They proposed using Food & Beverage funds as a potential funding source; the Council indicated general support but requested the Commissioners consider the formal contribution at a Commissioners meeting.

The request is advisory to the Commissioners; the Council did not commit county dollars directly during the hearing but recorded support for further consideration and asked staff to route the proposal to the Commissioners for action.
