Henry County Executive Committee reviews municipal code and flags Public Defender budget for follow-up

The Henry County Executive Committee met on July 13, 2026; Chair Marshall Jones called the meeting to order at approximately 6:15 p.m. Members approved the meeting agenda and the June 15, 2026 minutes, each by motion and unanimous consent.

Under new business, the committee reviewed the administrative section of the municipal code and agreed to "take a month and come back with any recommendations." Committee members also previewed standing-committee reports that will appear on the July 16 County Board agenda, including Administration, Public Safety, Transportation, Health & Social Services, Finance, and Plan/Development. Several committees reported multiple action items to forward to the County Board: Planning & Development (three items), Finance (three items) and Administration (one item).

The committee reviewed June claims and the report submitted by County Administrator Erin Knackstedt and discussed agenda items, the monthly report, the board calendar and rural cemetery maintenance. In executive comments members discussed recent use of Public Defender grant funds and the overall Public Defender budget. With no further business, the committee adjourned after a motion by Member Tim Yager and a second from Member Jill Darin.

Why this matters: The committee's review of municipal code provisions and the planned follow-up could lead to recommended amendments presented to the full County Board on July 16. Fiscal oversight questions raised about Public Defender grant spending and the PD budget may prompt further review by the County Board or administration.
