The Port Orford-Langlois School Board voted Nov. 17 to approve a district list of curricula for its Family Academy program while removing two titles for further review.
Katherine Hawthorne presented the proposed list and the board discussed restrictions on using government funds to purchase certain types of curriculum. After review, the board approved the list with the exception of "The Treehouse Schoolhouse" and "The Good and the Beautiful," which will be returned for additional examination. Judy Miles moved to approve the revised list; Angel Ashdown seconded the motion, and the vote was unanimous.
The approved list includes a mix of online and print resources intended to give families flexibility; the district will pay for families' curriculum of choice where lawful. Board members noted that state or federal restrictions bar purchase of religious curricula with government funds, and the two held titles will be evaluated against those rules before any purchase is authorized.
