The South Williamsport Area School Board on Jan. 13 approved a one-year pilot of ZeroEyes, a camera-based gun-detection service that analyzes existing district video feeds to flag unholstered firearms and routes candidate images to a ZeroEyes analyst for verification before notifying the district and other entities. The motion to approve the pilot, with first-year costs covered by Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) grant funding, passed on a 7–0–1 roll call with Director Rupert moving and Director Young seconding.
Kieran Carroll presented the technology and described the verification workflow: "The technology overlaps with the District's existing cameras to detect an unholstered gun. The image is then reviewed by a member of the ZeroEyes team to verify that the technology appropriately recognized a gun. ZeroEyes then notifies the District and appropriate entities about the gun threat." Supporters said the system would add a layer of verified alerts to existing monitoring; one board member abstained from the vote. The pilot length, performance metrics and any future procurement beyond the grant period were left for staff recommendations to the board.
