The Big Spring board approved a $150,114 summer capital project to upgrade the high school television studio, including electrical upgrades, lighting and new production equipment.
Supporters said the existing studio equipment dated to the building’s opening and that upgrades would provide hands-on career and technology experience for students interested in media and broadcast careers; administration reported 20 students were enrolled with 39 requests for the course. Opponents questioned the cost and suggested alternatives such as partnerships with nearby colleges or using lower-cost equipment.
"The students that came out of here developed confidence, public speaking skills, technology," a supporter said, describing long-term benefits. The motion to proceed passed with a reported vote of 6–3; administration said much of the spending covers electrical work needed to safely support new equipment.
