The Big Spring School District board approved three student field trips to Washington, D.C., after a donor commitment that substantially changed the district’s cost calculations. The board considered interest levels (29 seniors signed up at one point), estimated student meal costs listed in the packet ($935) and extra-duty pay estimates. Board member John King announced that the Evelyn Rogers Trust and the Glenn Logan Trust "will each provide 50% of the cost including the tip," offering to underwrite transportation so the trips could proceed.
Board members raised safety concerns and asked administrators how the school day would be managed for students who do not attend. Several members urged additional in-school celebrations or virtual tours so remaining students also have educational experiences. Administrators said the group-size estimates and permission windows could change and that chaperone and bus-seat calculations (the district had reserved 54-seat buses for the trip) would be finalized by administration. Mrs. Booth moved and the board accepted amendments to accept the trusts' donation, open up approximately 15 additional senior seats (first-come, first-served) and cover extra lunches as pledged; the combined motion passed by unanimous consent with at least one abstention noted by a board member who volunteered for possible driving duties.
