The Santiam Canyon School District introduced Phil Kelly at the Aug. 12 board meeting as the new junior–senior high school principal. Krista said Kelly came from Salem-Keizer and has experience across grades and systems; board members welcomed him and asked questions about his priorities.
Kelly said he was drawn to the district because he values smaller communities and personal relationships with students and staff. He described bringing experience from larger systems to a smaller district setting and expressed interest in connecting high-school students with the preschool for early-education experience.
Board members asked about his background in local athletics and leadership; Kelly said he coached for years and looks forward to building on existing programs. The district will provide opportunities for board members to meet him in future meetings and events.
