A committee member urged caution on applying the district's proposed artificial intelligence protocol to students in kindergarten through third grade, saying younger children may be especially vulnerable to intensive screen use.
"I am just concerned about K3 primarily... the emerging um research on brain research certainly suggests that younger children spending lots of time on screens not just in school but also at home uh is something to be concerned about," the committee member said, arguing that parameters around AI use are "really important" and that the protocol should represent current best practices and be revisited as evidence evolves.
Another member responded that "so much is unknown and we need to start somewhere and then it's going to evolve," after which the committee carried the motion to advance the policies. The exchange framed the committee's approach to AI as one of cautious adoption with future revision expected, rather than immediate broad implementation.
The discussion did not produce policy changes at the first reading; members said the protocol will be monitored and updated as research and guidance develop.
