The Board of Trustees Personnel Committee for the Mineral Point Unified School District discussed succession planning and leadership development during its March 2 meeting. Member Justin Skelding, chair of the Personnel Committee, raised the question, “How many people have a superintendent and principal license?” and the committee recorded that one person holds a superintendent license and approximately 6–8 staff hold principal licenses.
Skelding offered a calibration tool to serve as a starting point for a leadership framework and proposed integrating leadership discussions into summative reviews and professional development. Trustees focused on identifying leaders at each level and creating clearer guidance so staff can recognize and develop leadership qualities. Next steps recorded by the committee include Skelding sharing a modified version of the framework and administrative staff reviewing and defining the framework’s quadrants to align with district goals.
The discussion emphasized developing consistent evaluation tools — including a possible yearly summative evaluation or standardized walkthrough checklists — to support any leadership development plan. The committee did not adopt formal policy at the meeting; it requested those materials be returned for further review and possible workshop discussion.
