At its regular meeting, the Monroe SD 1J school board heard that repairing a badly settled corner of the high school track could require removing and replacing the surface and might cost in the "two to $300,000 range," though the speaker said a firm price requires opening the track to inspect the underlying materials. The estimate prompted members to caution that the true cost would not be known until crews exposed the subgrade.
Board members also reported interest from community members in developing about four to five acres south of the grade school for a football field, track, parking and a baseball diamond. The board repeatedly emphasized the need for pre-work, including engineering studies, surveying and wetland assessments, citing past Army Corps involvement on similar projects and the possibility of mitigation requirements before construction could proceed.
