Commission adopts parking‑enforcement ordinance on first reading after residents cite blocked streets

The Commission approved first reading of Ordinance 1579-26 to add citywide on‑street parking standards and an administrative enforcement pathway. City officials said the goal of the ordinance is compliance rather than revenue; the rules will be enforced administratively with an appeal process and possible transformation into uniform traffic citations if unpaid.

City Manager Ryan Levangood outlined enforcement and fines: "The proposed violation would be a $100 for handicap parking violation, $50 for parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, and $25, for commercial vehicle and truck parking violations as well as $25 for all other parking violations." Several residents from Eaton Hill and Griffith Avenue described safety problems caused by double parking and cars parked on the wrong side of narrow streets. Jennifer Hopkins said emergency response had been impeded: "Only a couple of weeks ago, I had to call for emergency services for my husband to be taken to the hospital." Commissioners approved the ordinance on first reading and the city attorney said minor zoning‑district clarifications will be returned at second reading.
