Commission backs property-line noise language for data centers; decibel limits cited

The planning commission reviewed a revised data-center criteria draft dated March 5 and focused on the proposed noise standard. Steve Dellinger, the township consultant, proposed that "Sound levels emitted from the data center as measured at the property line on which the data center is located shall comply with the Township’s Noise Ordinance." Zoning officer Duane Dellecker said the township owns a decibel reader and that, under the current Noise Ordinance, 65 and 75 are referenced as limits; Barb Green asked where readings would be taken and was told they are taken at the property line.

Commissioners also asked whether the ordinance should specify certified decibel-reading personnel when complaints arise; Mr. Meining raised the practical question of who would be qualified to take measurements. No final vote was taken—the commission directed staff to retain the property-line measurement language and to return with a revised draft addressing enforcement details and any necessary cross-references to the Noise Ordinance.
