New Rochelle Police Reads Biographies of 10 Fallen Officers at Rededication

At the center of the ceremony was an extended remembrance in which Captain Collins Coyne read the names and service details of 10 officers on the department's memorial. The readings included appointment dates, incidents that led to death and awards received; for example, Coyne described the killing of special patrolman Maurice Ahern during an investigation: "As he approached to investigate and render assistance, a struggle ensued and special patrolman Ahern was shot several times."

Coyne recited the careers and honors of multiple officers — including Lieutenant Thomas J. Payne, Patrolman Daniel F. Murphy, Patrolman Timothy Mahoney, Detective William E. Mancusi, Police Officer Alan B. MacLeod, Detective John C. Phillips, Police Officer Gary D. Pagano, Police Officer Kathleen O'Connor Funicello and Detective Mark Gatto — noting a range of causes of death (motor-vehicle crashes, gunfire and later illnesses tied to 9/11 response). Commissioner Neil K. Reynolds earlier summarized those causes: "Some of them died in a motor vehicle accident related to investigations or pursuit, some by gunfire, and some from a disease received in the search for bridal survivors in the days following the terrorist attack almost 25 years ago." The department emphasized that the rededication was intended so the officers and their families are not forgotten.
