Crystal Zelki, a member of the district equity committee, presented the committee’s early findings and recommendations to the Stanfield SD 61 board. The committee, she said, exists to "assist school leaders in addressing factors that affect the success of students who have historically been excluded or marginalized or underserved in Oregon's education system," and it is working to align local policy with the requirements of Senate Bill 732.
Zelki summarized several proposals the committee is considering, including a high‑school‑to‑elementary peer tutoring program, a peer mentorship program to encourage responsibility and accountability, and a review of bilingual staffing and access to extracurricular activities and cooperative sports. When a board member asked whether high‑school students would commit to tutoring, Zelki said her student representative "would be willing" and knew several peers who might participate, while acknowledging it could be a challenge to secure sustained commitments. The committee also flagged out‑of‑district enrollment and course/elective offerings as areas for continued review.
