Residents press commission on eldercare, workforce and a local nursing‑home gap

In the citizen‑engagement portion of the meeting, residents and commissioners discussed an urgent local need for eldercare options and workforce supports. A resident urged the commission to pursue nursing‑home or assisted‑living capacity within the county rather than forcing families to send older relatives to neighboring counties. Commissioners noted demographic challenges—several members observed a high proportion of older residents—and said infrastructure (water, sewer) and workforce availability are constraints for attracting a nursing‑home operator. "We have to change that mindset," one commissioner said about encouraging trade careers and local workforce retention. Commissioners proposed focusing on concrete, budgetable actions from the strategic plan—identifying top priorities to pursue before the FY2027 budget—and asked members to report supervisor guidance back to the commission in September.
