Parks staff described a proposal to participate in Indiana University's Environmental Resilience Institute urban green infrastructure program, which would place an IU student intern with the city to perform a tree-canopy study and develop a tree-planting and maintenance plan. Participation requires a $3,900 host fee. Parks staff said the White River Forestry Committee committed half of the matching funds and that the DNR grant is a one-to-one reimbursement match; the park board had already approved applying and the Board of Works approved the submission as well.
If selected as a community partner, staff said the program would produce a tree-planting and maintenance plan and an inventory-derived canopy baseline for future planning. The grant application was approved by the board by voice vote.
