Minersville Area SD to exclude GLP‑1 weight‑management drugs from some employee health coverage

The Minersville Area School District board on June 29 approved a change to the district health plan that excludes coverage for GLP‑1 prescription drugs when those drugs carry an FDA labeled indication for weight management, weight loss or obesity/overweight diagnoses for Secretarial, Auxiliary and other non‑bargaining employees. The motion, moved by Sarah R. Newton and seconded by Michael Andruchek, passed on a roll call vote with all members recorded as voting in favor.
The minutes state that the exclusion does not affect GLP‑1 drugs prescribed to treat Type 2 diabetes where the drug has an FDA labeled indication for that condition. The board provided a 60‑day grace period from July 1, 2026, for any employee with an active prescription to consult with their physician and pursue alternative treatment. The motion also notes explicitly that "there are no appeals or exceptions to this exclusion" as recorded in the meeting minutes.
Human resources and the benefits administrator will be responsible for notifying affected employees and implementing plan language changes with the district’s health plan vendor.
