Three eighth-grade students told the Kutztown Area School District board about a local-history project that traces the Eastern Road — now part of Kings Highway — and its role in trade and transport during the Revolutionary era.
"Something that I found interesting ... was that Martha Washington has stayed at Swansen, which is now Pop's Mole Shop, and that's in our town," said one presenter, describing discoveries made while researching the region's links to national history. The students — Lucas Pisilante, GA Pilante and Ria Ziggler — said they worked with the Kutztown Historical Society to research, design and install a multi-panel story walk in Kutztown Park to mark America 250.
Mr. Null, who introduced the students and said they were eighth graders in his history class last year, told the board the project grew from community partners who wanted students involved. The students described learning that locally made long rifles were sent along the Eastern Road to support George Washington's army and that several historic houses and field hospitals once lined the route.
The students said the story walk panels are in a public park for a limited time, and encouraged residents to visit while the installation remains. Board members and staff thanked the students, the historical society and local partners for the collaborative effort.
