At its March 3 work session the Seaside School District planning committee narrowed the application narrative and screening priorities it will use to evaluate candidates. Committee members settled on three narrative prompts and a short list of preferred qualifications to be used in a scoring matrix.
Staff presented a list of seven or more possible narrative prompts and the committee agreed to require three narrative answers in the application. Committee members favored questions that produce substantive, work‑product style responses (for example, describing an approach to a multi‑year structural budget gap and outlining a three‑ to five‑year capital plan). The committee also kept an instructional leadership question that asks candidates to "share an example of an instructional improvement initiative you have led and how it changed student outcomes." (language drawn from prior application materials).
To make screening practical, members agreed on five preferred qualifications: approximately five years in administration, Spanish/bilingual skills, experience managing public budgets, labor relations/negotiations experience, and demonstrated involvement in community partnerships. Staff will implement those preferences in a checkbox matrix for pre‑screening applications; the matrix will give points for each preferred trait and includes an additional point for veteran status.
