Library report: staffing, program growth and space study show need to plan for expansion

Laura delivered the library’s annual report, outlining revenue sources (city, county, partner city and state), recent hires and program growth that drove attendance higher this fiscal year.

“Collections and circulation show our county patronage is a little higher than our city patronage right now,” Laura said, noting Johnson County and the city of Shueyville made larger contributions this year. The library hired a part‑time assistant and two high‑school summer workers; programs rose from 74 to 101 events and attendance increased by roughly 900 people.

Laura also reviewed a state‑funded space needs assessment that concluded the library is undersized for current use and will approach the next size category as the area grows. “The basic finding is we’re too small for where we are,” she said, and described possible expansion options including exercising a right of first refusal on an adjacent building and lot.

She reported the library received an American Library Association grant to install an automatic front door to improve accessibility and said remaining grant funds will likely be used for a ramp at the rear entrance. Council asked about square‑foot targets and plans; Laura said staff will continue to evaluate options and return with recommendations when more concrete proposals are ready.
