District staff told trustees that fall athletics showed revenue improvements compared with last year but still finished in the red for several sports. Volleyball ended the season roughly $1,619 in deficit despite capturing gate revenue at three games; football finished about $1,355 short. The district collected about $14,200 in activity fees, but coaching costs are paid from the general fund and the s account continues to run negative balances.
Reporters explained that officials' costs set by the Montana Officials Association (games, mileage) contribute heavily to expenses, and that the district made significant savings from two new vans for cross‑country and other trips. "These new vans ... have been a great cost savings for us already," a presenter said, noting vans reduce bus driver downtime, hotel and meal costs for drivers on overnight trips and provide scheduling flexibility.
Board members were warned that winter sports—basketball and wrestling—are the most expensive seasons and the district will likely run an overall deficit after winter even with increased activity fees. The board discussed the fee structure, volunteer reception at gates and the need to monitor athletic account balances.
