Committee holds vote on mailbox reimbursement increase, asks staff for more data

The Rules and Administration Committee of the City of Aurora on Aug. 18 held a proposal to raise the city mailbox reimbursement from $75 to $100 and asked staff to return with additional historical data and public-works input before taking final action. Attorney Deb Lang, representing the law department, told the committee the city is proposing the change because building-material costs rose since the pandemic: "I'm here to ask for a modification to this ordinance to increase the reimbursement amount from $75 to $100."

Committee members pressed for more context on claims volume, payment scope and whether the baseline amount would leave homeowners short after higher-cost replacements. Lang described the claims handling: residents file via 311, public-works/streets verifies whether city equipment was involved and whether the mailbox met U.S. Postal Service placement standards, temporary mailboxes are provided and a check request then goes to finance. Lang also said the committee processed about 20 mailbox reimbursement claims last year. An alderman proposed amending the ordinance to $150 and suggested requiring receipts for amounts above the baseline; the chair instead moved to hold the item for two weeks to let public works provide historical data and impact estimates. The motion to hold passed 5-0.

The committee noted the last reimbursement increase was in 2019 (from $50 to $75) and discussed that claims generally reimburse materials only and typically do not cover labor or concrete installation costs. When the item returns, the committee said it will consider the motion on a larger increase to $150 if supported by the requested data.
