The superintendent used his report to warn board members that state funding calculations can rely on data that are several years old and produce large funding swings that may not reflect current local conditions.
He explained that the district and a coalition of others have asked the Oregon Department of Education to review how it calculates student funding because the current model sometimes uses data that are "about three years old" and produces inconsistent results. "There are some districts this year that are going to see a significant multi-million dollar drop," he said, adding that some districts may see "something like a $10 million drop." He urged the board to be prepared for budget pressures as the long legislative session ramps up and noted he will participate in advocacy meetings in Portland.
The superintendent also reported the district's current enrollment at "1,541," discussed staffing considerations for the coming year, and noted summer facilities work will prioritize safety projects. The board acknowledged the report and directed staff to monitor legislative activity and funding calculations.
