Library pauses mural solicitation after wording raised concerns

The library director told the board the mural artist solicitation included language that caused confusion and concern because it appeared to give special consideration to artists of certain demographics. She said city staff and community relations staff reviewed the matter and "determined that it was best to just put a pause on that uh the mural call for now," while procedures and language are reviewed.

The director said the library received a mix of responses after the call went out, including a few anonymous hostile phone calls and some unfriendly emails, but also polite and supportive messages. She noted a state legislator contacted her directly after visiting the library and described that conversation as positive: "she was lovely on the phone." The board did not vote on the mural at this meeting and the director said staff will work with city colleagues to create clearer procedures before reissuing any call for art.
