A parent asked why many bread and cereal items contain wheat; the panel answered that whole grain wheat is the typical staple but said the district can and will accommodate students with allergies. "We buy a gluten-free pizza for pizza day, and we just pop an extra one in the oven for that child," a panelist said, describing a common accommodation for students with wheat sensitivity.
Panelists added that for more severe or medically complex allergies the school nurses and nutritionists need to be involved to ensure safe substitutions. The panel also said alternative milks (for example, oat milk) can be provided if recommended by a doctor or nutritionist and coordinated through the school's health staff.
